Formerly manager of advanced sales with Maritime Life in Halifax (1990-1998). Also, previously has worked in head office underwriting, human resources, marketing research and as an advisor all with Imperial Life (1973-1990).

Married to Mary (who works in the Nova Scotia school system as an autism specialist) with four children - Tom (with Great West Life Group Retirement Services in Vancouver), Peter (PhD. student at Dalhousie University), Kate (B.Comm grad) and Christopher (B.Ed.student at Queen's in Kingston,Ont).

Outside interests include studying libertarian writings including the Austrian economics approach to the workings of a free market economy. Also running, rowing single sculls,cycling and cross-country skiing.
